Rules: The car had to be sold new in 1988
I personally would buy a 1988 Buick. This Reatta looked the business. Those sleek lines kill me every time. And it had a touch screen control system in 1988!!! Finally I could have ordered it as a convertible which I probably would have done. It outshines it’s Cadillac sibling in almost every way. These are so cheap now I am almost tempted to buy one.
What would you buy Oppo?

I own 3 cars that were offered new in 1988, one of which was actually built in 1988 as well. So that’s the one I pick, 1988 Peugeot 205 GTI.

Mitsubishi Galant GLSi 4x4. I know the model was produced in 1988, but not sure about the avilability of exactly this trim level and 4x4 layout. My first car was ‘89, and it was brilliant.
Why not VR-4? Don’t think they were left hand drive at that point, and I don’t want to sit at the wrong side..

I don’t know who made such a claim, as they’re clueless. The Peugeot 205 was introduced in ‘83 if I’m not mistaken. The Golf GTI in the mid 1970s. Not that this made it the first hot hatch, but it certainly did popularize the type of car.

This could be a nice choice (but not in red). My other candidates are 320is, M5, 911 something and Toyota Soarer. There might be more but these were the first in my mind currently.
I currently have have three German cars that were available in 1988 and one of them is actually on my candidate list. There’s a saying that many people like things that were new when they were 11 years old. If it would be true I would like cars made in 1988. I guess it could be true.

That’s a tenth quicker to 60 than an ‘88 Countach, but Lamborghini claimed a 1/4 time of 12.8, though I’m having a hard time confirming that.
Of course, you’re also forgetting the F40, which would’ve blown the doors off the TTA with a 0-62 of 3.8 and a 1/4 of 11.7.
